Released in 1981 by the Australian group SPK (an acronym whose expansion shifted several times over the band's career, from clinical references to more ambiguous formulations), Information Overload Unit follows a debut album still tied to a more overtly provocative aesthetic, moving instead toward a more structured use of metal percussion and concrète tape work. The group, originally formed by Graeme Revell alongside Neil Hill and Danny Rumour, worked with struck industrial scrap, homemade noise generators, and field recordings, at a moment when industrial as a genre was still defining its own vocabulary. The record operates in a colder, more clinical register than contemporaries like Throbbing Gristle: less direct provocation, more simulation of an environment — the one implied by the title, a system so overloaded with information it can no longer filter signal from noise. The metallic percussion isn't chasing shock so much as building a repetitive rhythmic texture, industrial in the literal sense of the word: machinery running on a continuous cycle, indifferent to whoever is listening. It sits well within the genealogy of the British industrial scene and the broader post-industrial lineage the site covers: less for any direct affinity with CCRU (which would arrive more than a decade later) than for an aesthetic that treats the factory, the clinic, and the archive as sites producing a deliberately dehumanized sonic experience.
