French philosopher and sociologist, theorist of hyperreality: the progressive substitution of the real with signs and simulations that end up preceding and determining what they were meant to represent. In his 1980s-90s writings he describes a world in which the map precedes the territory, in which the media event replaces the event itself. Operational assessment: The concept of the simulacrum supplies the theoretical architecture onto which most subsequent hyperstitional thought is grafted: if the sign can precede and produce the real, then a sufficiently propagated fiction ceases to be pure representation. Baudrillard remains an ambiguous case, however — where the CCRU celebrates this collapse as accelerationist opportunity, he diagnoses it as a melancholic, almost terminal condition. Active traces: his reading of the Gulf War as a media event rather than a military one remains a textbook case.
