SURVEILLANCE DOSSIER – VAPORWAVE / AESTHETICS OF SIMULATION
Origin: early 2010s, online networks (Bandcamp, forums, imageboards). Primary vector: Chuck Person (Daniel Lopatin) – Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 (2010).
A musical and visual microgenre born entirely online, built by slowing down and distorting 1980s-90s commercial music (smooth jazz, muzak, advertising jingles), paired with an aesthetic of 1990s 3D graphics, Greek statues and corrupted corporate logos.
Operational assessment:
Vaporwave applies in pop-diffuse form the same principle that The Caretaker formalizes in a more experimental register: a commercial past never actually lived as such is reconstructed and rendered nostalgic after the fact. It is hauntology produced collectively and anonymously by the network, often without its creators knowing the term or Mark Fisher's theory.
Active traces: vaporwave aesthetics have infected advertising, fashion and game design well beyond the original musical circuit, becoming commodity itself a decade after critiquing commodity.
Contagion level: high and constantly mutating — the genre was born online and continues to reproduce in derivative forms (mallsoft, hardvapour, simpsonwave).
