A sexually transmitted disease among suburban teenagers in the 1970s produces irreversible physical mutations — tails, gills, second faces — turning the pubescent body into territory for semiotic as much as biological contagion. Burns builds a clinically precise allegory in which physical transformation functions as a direct metaphor for the cultural transmission of taboo and shame among peers.
