The practice emerges from the fusion of pre-existing online chaos-magick circles and anonymous-imageboard culture, reaching public visibility during the 2016 U.S. election cycle, when certain political memes were explicitly described by their creators as "sigils" charged with magical intent to influence the vote's outcome. The link to hyperstition is the most direct and self-declared in the entire lexicon: meme magick practitioners are not describing an unconscious cultural mechanism — they openly claim to be constructing hyperstitions, often explicitly citing the CCRU and Nick Land as theoretical sources, closing the loop between academic theory and street-level operative practice. Signal detected in: the memetic narratives surrounding memecoins (where a meme's "charge" is explicitly translated into market capitalization), the rhetoric of certain online political subcultures that describe themselves in explicitly magical terms, the persistence of the sigil/meme format even after the decline of its most visible 2015-2016 phase.
